So long notepad, hello notepad2!

Posted by gene on 15. June 2005 14:32

I use notepad all the time.  Whether I'm on the phone, or building a tasklist, or outlining a project, I pop open notepad before I consider opening another tool for two reasons:

  1. Fewer options means fewer distractions. I prefer text only email, and if I have formatting tools, I spend too much time trying to make something pretty rather than getting the facts down.
  2. I'm frequently looking over code and notepad loads much faster than dreamweaver or visual studio.

Notepad2 is also relatively small (at ~500K I'll admit it is a whopping 10X's as big as notepad) but it adds features that always annoyed me in the past.

  • A toolbar with a few buttons (just enough, not too many)
  • Line numbers!  No more GoTo
  • Find includes Regular Expression support
  • A transparency mode that allows you to set notepad on top of another document without having to switch windows!
  • Text zoom, to easily increase font size - saving me an eye appt for at least one more year :)
  • Undo memory

There are more features and I could babble on, but try it yourself!
